Mayor Ben McAdams is a 7th generation Utahn, elected to serve as Salt Lake County mayor in 2012. He was supported by a broad cross-section of local mayors, community and business leaders and has governed as a fiscally-responsible, bipartisan, common sense leader who gets things done on behalf of the 1.1 million residents here.
Ben’s initiatives, such as an innovative program to help low-income kids have access to high-quality preschool, received bipartisan County Council support. It has given 600 families an opportunity for their children to enter kindergarten ready to succeed. He will bring that same bipartisan approach to issues such as minimizing homelessness, reforming the criminal justice system to improve public safety, and supporting the private sector in expanding and offering more good-paying jobs. Ben knows the best way to keep taxes low is a thriving private sector and an economy that offers broad-based prosperity.
Ben graduated from the University of Utah and Columbia Law School. He has practiced law in New York and Utah. Ben was elected to the Utah State Senate in 2008, representing Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake and West Valley City. He and his wife (fellow Columbia grad) Julie and their four children live in Salt Lake City, where they enjoy hiking, soccer and baseball and the many cultural activities offered throughout the county.
